I’m always thinking about how to get inspiration to write.
It’s something that comes up in conversation all too often; I hear people say they ‘feel stuck’ when writing content and end up staring at the blank screen or paper awaiting inspiration and for the words to flow.
It happens to the best of us and there’s no magic formula. Here’s a few things that work for me.
Carry a notebook to jot down ideas as they come to you. Better still record your thoughts. Often translating the spoken word into the written, will perfectly capture your tone of voice and result in a really authentic piece of writing. Using software such as Evernote helps with this.
Read. Read as much as you can. I’ve reignited my love affair with reading over the last few weeks and it’s helped me enormously. Just surrounding myself with stories and words prompt my ideas and remind me that I can do it!
Conversations. I love to listen more than I talk (although my goodness I do love talking) and this is one of the key ways that I get my ideas to write more creatively. Bouncing ideas around with not only clients and colleagues but also friends and family work wonders for me.
Set yourself a deadline. I don’t know about you but a little bit of pressure is always motivational for me – even more so if you share this deadline with others and get them to remind you! The feeling that I don’t want to let others down is very powerful.
Get outside. It’s an oldie, but certainly a goody. Time in the fresh air away from computer screens refreshes the mind and body. It tires me out but wakes up my mind. Sounds contrived, but it works!
Listen to music you love but also new tunes you may not be familiar with. Learn the lyrics. I find it gives me energy and improves my mood, which is a great formula for getting creative!
How do you get inspiration? Do let me know!
