I’ve been learning to play pool over the last couple of years. It’s been mainly during weekends for fun with an ambition to become known as ‘Pool Queen’ in my social circles.
But in all seriousness, the last few months has seen me really start to hone my skills and understand the often complex and ever-changing rules. So much so that I’ve even joined a pool team.
Pool (or billiards) is an interestingly addictive and sociable game. However, the game isn’t only a fun way to spend time, but it’s also made me realise there are similarities between playing pool and running a business.
That’s right, playing pool, in my opinion, can make you a better at business! Here’s a few lessons I’ve learned.
Take your time. This is the most frequent piece of advice I’m given when playing pool. Wherever I am, from opponents and team players alike. And it’s true. The art of patience will get you a long way especially when it comes to producing a great result. My example here in a business context is one I try and remember daily – check, check and check your text again before publishing it to avoid errors that’ll make you look daft.
Concentrate. Ignore irrelevant distractions and stick to your target. I’ve lost easy shots by chattering or looking up from the table when someone walks by. The same rule applies in business – instead of jumping from one job to another and getting distracted in between, focus on the actions you need to accomplish what you set out to do in the first place!
Play the long game. Pool trains you to think ahead, be strategic and seize opportunities. Sometimes you can do fairly well hitting the ball and hoping for the best. But getting the results you want are usually planned out first. The same goes in business. Whether it’s planning your digital marketing or investing in expensive kit, it’s worth doing your homework, assessing your risks and preparing your plans before taking your shot.
Be a good sport. Sometimes, no matter what, there are shots that I take where the ball hits the table cushions the wrong way, bounces back out of the pocket or even flies off the table itself. This happens in business as well. Sometimes circumstances are out of your control so don’t beat yourself up; above all stay positive and polite with others and shake their hand at the end – whomever they are. You never know when you may cross paths again!
