Organising meetings, attending events and other diary dates is an essential part of life, especially in business, but what happens when it consistently goes wrong?
Over the course of the last couple of years I have organised appointments so that they are logistically easy, best use of everyone’s time and with plenty of notice. So why do I keep making mistakes?
It doesn’t make sense given I am so organised in everything else I do! Planning my client’s digital strategies and content is a joy to me.
Nevertheless, my own diary management is not! I have managed to fail to attend networking events, have double-booked myself on many occasions and the latest drama was arriving for a client meeting a whole day early.
The impact of this? Mainly me running in circles in a panic and feeling very silly. Luckily, no-one else has felt the drama or have been offended – but unless I sort this out it’s a risk just waiting to happen.
So, no more! In 2018 my promise to myself is to adopt a methodical approach that should make sure I get where I need to be when I need to be there, and crucially, help me stay calm and carry on!
How am I going to do this? I’ve used all the digital options such as Google Calendar, Outlook and various other apps, played with wall planners, and even had other human beings manage my diary. While they all do offer great things, I’ve come to realise that I when I rely on technology or other people it all goes wrong.
This is because I pass over the responsibility. So, I’ve decided to take the power back and go old-school. Once upon a time ago it was the way I worked in business and I rarely made mistakes. I made the decision on the time and place and took the time to write it down. I think it’s this very action that is the formula to my success. I’m interested to explore if this method still is the best one for me in 2018 and halt the diary drama!
Wish me luck!
